Finding Your Voice!

When I first started my voiceover journey, I just knew I’d be perfect for those deep, serious, sultry commercial reads. I mean—hello—I was named after Lauren Bacall, for crying out loud. It felt like destiny!

But here’s what I learned: the voice I thought I should have wasn’t the one that came most naturally. Turns out, I’m at my best when I’m a little lighter, a little brighter, with a splash of wry. That’s where I feel the most at home—and that’s where I connect the strongest.

The truth is: you won’t really know your voice until you KNOW your voice. Spend time with it. Try it on in different ways. Experiment. Practice scripts across genres. Play with tone, pace, energy, and see what sticks. You might be surprised where you actually shine. That magical “click” happens when you stop trying to sound like what you think the industry wants—and start leaning into what feels real for you.

It’s not about limiting yourself. Over time, your range will grow. You’ll take classes, push boundaries, stretch into new genres—and you should! But your foundation? That starts with dialing into the sound that feels authentic. Because the most conversational reads—the ones that truly connect—are rooted in something simple: they sound like you. Because they are you.

So if you're still figuring it out, you're not behind. You're just in the process. Take that acting class. Jump into that improv group. Book a session with a coach in a genre you’re curious about. Keep exploring. Stop chasing the voice you think you should have—press record, and finally meet the voice that’s been there all along.
